Retro Kitchen Ideas - The Fridge

Buying appliances has to be one of the most soul-sucking experiences there is. Last summer our refrigerator died at the New House just about this time, and I was so excited to finally replace that hulking beast with something new and pretty. Until I got down to the nitty-gritty details and realized that, short of removing the center island, there were no fridges for sale that would fit in that space! Our refrigerator already was counter-depth, and had two side-by-side doors with very little clearance in the front. All of the new fridges at the big box stores either had one large door that could not open in that space, or a pull-out drawer for the freezer that could not pull-out for the same reasons. We're talking about two feet of clearance, people. We finally settled on the stainless steel Haier Quad , which had the advantage of selling under $1000, but was not the pretty fridge of my dreams. Armchair Shopping: Kitchen Rug

I had a spare 20 minutes this weekend (when does that ever happen?!) and I went on to FLOR's Web site to mosey around. Well, what do you know? They have this amazing "Brick" colored floor tile on sale in several textures. I bought 5 tiles to cover the approximately 2'x8' space hugging the cabinetry under the sink and stove. Since it's a high-use area and spills are a real possibility (part of the reason that we want a rug to protect our precious new flooring!), I went with the Fedora style which is currently on sale for $5.49 a square. So, that's about $27 for our area rug in the kitchen, and I also grabbed a $4 discount from typing in "FLOR promo code" from RetailMeNot . I love that site. If I end up super loving the brick color, I might put some down in another texture in the living room. I'm hoping that it will warm up the space and provide some serious stain coverage. Sad Day for MCM Fans

There was fake wood paneling behind me) That day in April 2009 that we first toured our future home I was so enamored with the original built-in cabinetry that I took something like five photographs of the cabinets alone. The owners of the rental house on the corner have finally kicked out the occupants. It's much quieter now and the 2-3 extra large trucks that were parked there are gone. On the way to pick up some butter, last Saturday night, I was witness to a private tragedy done to the corner house. I saw the entire cabinetry pulled out haphazardly onto their front lawn, and a man viciously beating a door. Just to break it.
